    What is Eczema?

Eczema is the name for a group of inflammatory skin conditions that can also occur on the scalp. The exact cause of scalp eczema is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. Factors such as stress, weather changes, certain foods, and skincare products can trigger or exacerbate scalp eczema.

    Symptoms

Scalp eczema can present with symptoms such as redness, itching, flaking, and scaling of the scalp skin. In more severe cases, it may lead to crusting, oozing, and even hair loss.

    Treatment

Eczema of the scalp treatments at our Mississauga clinic may include medicated shampoos containing ingredients like coal tar, salicylic acid, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide to help reduce inflammation and control flaking. Topical corticosteroids, antifungal creams, and calcineurin inhibitors may also be prescribed by a dermatologist for more severe cases.

Proper scalp hygiene is essential for managing scalp eczema. This includes washing the hair and scalp with specific protocols indicated for this condition. Avoiding scratching the affected areas, and moisturizing the scalp regularly to prevent dryness.

At our Toronto Eczema of the scalp clinic we offer therapies that can help patients manage eczema of the scalp by reducing the frequency and severity of the itchiness, inflammation and discomfort that accompanies this condition. Hair can become weak, dry and fragile as a result of scalp eczema and our Trichologists and hair loss practitioners work together to treat both the scalp and hair length.
