What is Psoriasis (of the scalp)?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by an overactive immune response that speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. While the exact cause of scalp psoriasis is not fully understood, it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Scalp psoriasis can exist alone without the condition presenting itself anywhere else on the body.
Symptoms
Psoriasis is a common skin condition that results in red, itchy, and scaly patches on the scalp.
Scalp psoriasis can present as thick, silvery scales or plaques on the scalp, which may extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead, ears, or neck. It can be itchy, inflamed, and sometimes painful. In some cases, scalp psoriasis can lead to temporary hair loss.
Treatment
Psoriasis of the scalp treatments at our Mississauga clinic aim to reduce inflammation, soften and remove scales, and slow down the excessive skin cell turnover. Treatment options may include medicated shampoos containing ingredients like coal tar, salicylic acid, or ketoconazole, topical corticosteroids, calcipotriene (a form of vitamin D), phototherapy, and systemic medications in severe cases.
Regular scalp care is essential for managing scalp psoriasis.
At Toronto psoriasis of the scalp clinic we offer treatments that may work in combination with what your Dermatologist or Doctor have recommended, or in some cases our patients respond very well without the need for prescription medication.
