What is Folliculitis?
Folliculitis is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become inflamed or infected. When it affects the scalp, it is referred to as scalp folliculitis.
Scalp folliculitis can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections of the hair follicles. Factors such as friction from clothing or headgear, excess oil production, sweat, and poor hygiene can contribute to the development of folliculitis on the scalp.
There are different types of scalp folliculitis, including bacterial folliculitis, fungal folliculitis (often caused by Malassezia yeast), and eosinophilic folliculitis (more commonly seen in people with compromised immune systems).
Symptoms
Common symptoms of scalp folliculitis include red, inflamed bumps or pustules at the base of hair follicles. It can be itchy, painful, and may sometimes ooze pus. In severe cases, folliculitis on the scalp can lead to hair loss or scarring.
Treatment
Folliculitis treatments at our Mississauga clinic typically involves maintaining good scalp hygiene, using medicated shampoos containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or selenium sulfide, and in some cases, topical or oral antibiotics or antifungal medications may be prescribed by a healthcare provider to treat the infection.
Treatments at Truly You Hair and Scalp Clinic incorporate both topical and oral therapies that aid in the treatment of folliculitis. We will also work with your medical team to ensure our treatments coincide and compliment one another for optimal results.
